Globalization

In lecture 32 we learned how globalization plays a role in the spread of cyberporn and the internet. Globalization is "the rapidly developing processes of complex interconncections between societies, cultures, institutions, and individuals worldwide." A factor that has contributed to the rise of globalization is laissez-faire capitalism, or "the assumption that a free-market economic system has sufficient checks and balances in place to ensure that the legitimate interests of all members of a society will be met." This economic philosophy- which minimizes the role of the government- advocates the creation of wealth through free trade. It is this free trade that allows porn to be distributed throughout the globe. The world needs it porn.

Victoria Secret is trying to create sexual advertisements because they are selling a "sexual" product. Of course sex sells, and this is why Victoria Secret is creating commercials like this. I do not think it is justified to say that these commercials are borderline pornographic though. Would you say the same thing if these women were wearing bathing suits instead of lingerie. And of course they would have these women lying in beds because lingerie is meant for the bedroom. If these commercials were borderline porn films I do not believe that the FCC would allow them on television. You would also have to be nieve to think that Victoria Secret did not market to men as well. I do not know for sure but I would guess that at least 3–40% of their sales are to men. Bottom line sex sells!!!

Course Overview

I thought this course was very educational and entertaining at the same time. It was nice that the class accomodated my busy schedule of classes and working outside of school. Though not having to be forced to blog, I found myself getting behind at times. The lectures were quite insightful and enjoyable to watch, and at times I found myself actually wishing I was in the class rather than being online. This course has opened my mind to many thoughts and ideas that I was completely unaware of. After all is said, this course was rather enjoyable.

Baffling Statistics

After reading chapter 10 on "Child Pornography" I was amazed at some of the statistics the reader had to offer. According to an estimate by the Los Angeles Police Department, there are at least 300,000 children under the age of sixteen involved in the nationwide child pornography industry. The article also claims that "each year, fifty thousand missing children are victims of pornography. Most are kidnapped, raped, abused, filmed for porno magazines and movies and, more often than not, murdered." This to me is completely and utterly disgusting. On an economic level, critics estimate that the child pornography industry earns an annual revenue of approximately $5 billion dollars. Child pornography is and continues to be a major problem in society that needs to be put to an end.

Is it Really Decent????

After reading about the Communications Decency Act that was passed in 1996, I felt that it was clearly unconstitutional. I could not believe that this act was approved by Congress. The internet should be given the same free speech protection as print. I understand that this act was trying to make the internet safer for children, but it would not make it the electronic media it was intended to be for adults. The Communications Decency Act was not about child pornography, obscenity, or using the internet to stalk children. These were already illegal under the current law. The Communications Decency Act would have prohibited texts of classic fiction ( "Catcher in the Rye" ) and other materials which enjoyed full protection under the first amendment if published in a newspaper, magazine, or a book. If not for the landmark decision in 1997, the internet we enjoy today would not nearly be the same.

1) What is the typical salary of one of your actors, is it more than your average heterosexual porn star, and what determines their salary?

2) Since many believe that heterosexual pornography helps to promote violence against women, do you feel that gay pornography may promote violence against men? Why or why not?

How does porn create more violence against women? The facts have shown that as more sexuallt explicit material becomes available via the internet, that the amount of forcible rapes has steadily declined. Like you said, men want what they cannot have so they view pornographic material. It is ridiculous to think that because someone views pornographic material, they are going to sexually assualt someone ( man or woman ). Have you sexually assaulted someone yet? Becuase I am sure you have viewed a number or pornographic films like everyone else in this class. Porn does not create voilence.

In Morgan's article she sees rape as the quintessential patriarchal crime, a very explicit acting out of the domination, violence, subjugation, and possession that extends throughout society. For Morgan, rape extends beyond the legal definition, to anytime sexual intercourse occurs when it has not been initiated by the women out of affection and desire. Porn is not an expression of male domination and exploitation of women. Porn is a way for men and women both to express themselves sexually. Obviously the women who are in pornographic films must enjoy sex, so how can it be considered "rape," as Morgan puts it. I do not believe that porn has idealized that aggressive sexual acts are right, or that rape is being practiced. In most cases women are the aggressors in pornographic films ( at least 50% ). Robin Morgan must just face the fact that there are women out there in the world today that just love the cock.

After reading the O'Toole article I found it suprising that porn producer John Stagliano refused to use condoms in his films. Especially when the producer is HIV positive, after having unprotected anal sex. For a man who makes a point of taking a lead with practicing good ethics in the industry, Stagliano was disappointingly inflexible on this issue. "I have shot with rubbers four to five times, with people I really wanted to use. But if people say they want to use rubbers, then usually I don't hire them (O'Toole)." HIV tests are given every six months to his actors, and a DNA test is given every two months. But what about who the person was with the night before? An actor could come in contact with the virus and his or her producer would never know because the tests are given every two and six months. I understand it is his choice to use condoms or not, but not hiring someone because they want to practice safe sex is ridiculous.
